Current Curriculum Plan – Literacy with preparation for MA Dept. of Elem. and Second. Education Reading Specialist Licensure Concentration
This concentration provides students with current research, theory, and teaching practices in reading, writing, and oral language. The focus is on understanding reading and writing disorders in the context of oral reading development. Specific knowledge is gained on diagnostic tools and strategic interventions for struggling readers and writers. This concentration requires coursework and a specific kind of practicum experience as outlined in the MA DESE curriculum requirements for Reading Specialist licensure. Hours obtained in this practicum do not count as ASHA clinical hours usually, unless the reading supervisor is an ASHA-certified clinician. Students interested in working as Speech-Language Pathologists and Reading Specialists in Massachusetts public schools should consider this option.
Total Core Required Credits: 72
(Core courses must be taken for letter grade.)
Total Elective Credits required: 0
