Dismissal Policy
Dismissal is a summary determination of program faculty that a student has failed to acquire and apply the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities within a program of study or that student conduct is inconsistent with published standards of ethical behavior and professionalism. At the Institute, programs appoint a faculty committee or coordinator to monitor and evaluate student performance and conduct. The committee and coordinator offer recommendations to the program director/chair related to student academic progress, including dismissal. The program director/chair is responsible for final determinations of student academic progress, including dismissal.
The most common reason for a student’s dismissal is the failure to maintain minimum academic standards. Additional reasons for dismissal include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Academic dishonesty
- Excessive unexcused absences
- Failure to make satisfactory progress in completing program requirements
- Failure to support a safe, healthy learning environment
- Inability to meet and/or maintain essential functions or technical standards required for a program of study
- Performance in a clinical setting that threatens the delivery of safe, high-quality, person-centered care
- Unethical or unprofessional conduct toward other students, faculty, staff, clinical education supervisors, and patients/clients or their caregivers
Students should consult their program and/or School policies for additional guidance and requirements.
Once a student has been dismissed, the student has the right to request appeal of the dismissal decision. The student must request the appeal in writing within ten business days of receiving notice of dismissal from the program.
