3. Curriculum

  1. The curriculum plan and overview is found here: https://www.mghihp.edu/academics-degree-programs-genetic-counseling/curriculum-plan-master-science-genetic-counseling

  2. All courses utilize active learning modalities to engage students fully in the material and to improve communication skills, comprehension, and retention. The program is designed to support the adult learner, recognize the importance of lived experiences, foster an environment of intellectual inquiry and life-long learning, and provide an atmosphere of academic and clinical scholarship and excellence.

  3. The curriculum is also designed using Team-based Learning (TBL) principles.  Unlike a lecture-based classroom, TBL enhances students’ communication and critical thinking skills and also improves retention. TBL is structured to promote individual accountability within the context of group learning activities.  Students study the content (basic concepts and knowledge) outside of the classroom through independent study modules that are designed by faculty and use various modalities. This allows classroom time to be used for dynamic and engaging activities that provide students with the opportunity to apply content. Faculty direct these application activities, facilitate the experience, promote student understanding, and guide students with the ability to apply the content outside of the classroom in clinical and non-clinical settings.
