AP11. Grading
Institute Grading Policy
Refer to the Institute Catalog: http://mghihp.smartcatalogiq.com/current/Catalog/Academic-Policies/Grading-Policy
Program Grading Policy
Grades are assigned at the end of each semester. Students must pass each course with a grade of 73% or better. Students who fail to earn a grade of 73% or better in a course will fail the course. Refer to the section on Academic Progression for additional information on failed courses.
Passing Grade Criterion
Students must meet two criteria to successfully complete each course. Failure to meet all criteria will result in a failing grade for one or more courses.
Criterion #1: Comprehensive Practical Examinations
Criterion #2: Course Assessment Weightings
- Students who meet Criterion #1 must achieve 73% or better in each course based on the following weighting of course assignments in order to successfully complete the course:

- If this criterion is not met for a course, it constitutes a course failure. Students who fail to meet this criterion will be assigned a grade of F for the course.
*Note: Criterion #2 may be amended if course instruction is being delivered in an alternative fashion. Please see each course syllabus to confirm the course assessment weightings for each individual course.
Incomplete
In the event of significant hardship, a student may submit a written request to course faculty for an issuance of an “incomplete grade” and an extension of time to complete a course.
Students should consult with their advising team when submitting a request for an extension of time to complete a course. The request must stipulate a reason (personal health information does not need to be disclosed). At the time of the request, it must be mathematically possible for the student to achieve a passing grade.
Students must complete all course requirements to change an incomplete grade according to the timeline agreed upon by the instructor(s), not to exceed two calendar years from the date of the request. If a student does not complete the required work within the stipulated time period, the grade will automatically change to a "Fail". Permission from the instructor(s) will be required for extension of time for completion.
For a didactic academic course, the following may generally be considered for the issuance of an incomplete grade:
1.signifcant illness
2. medical emergency
4.bereavment experience
5.extreme hardship
For a full-time clinical education experience course, the following may generally be considered for the issuance of an incomplete grade:
1. makeup of days due to illness
2. slow rate of progress with clear documentation of upward trajectory and evidence that additional time would allow for successful course completion
3. extenuating health, personal, or emergency circumstances
4. clinical site-based barriers to completion
Electives
- Students have a choice of two, 1-credit electives, during the 3rd year of the program. Students may elect to take an elective as Pass/Fail. Students will need to follow the Institute’s Grading Policy for opting to take a course Pass/Fail. When considering a Pass/Fail grade option, students shall consult their Academic Advisor.
Independent Studies
The department may require or recommend independent studies under certain conditions. (see AP-11) Grading of the independent study will be outlined in the independent study agreement. Criterion 1 and Criterion 2 above do not apply to independent studies.
Grade Appeal Policy:
The Institute expects that all students be treated fairly and that evaluations of their academic performance, standing, and progress are conducted objectively. The Institute’s faculty are committed to grading and student evaluation practices that are fair, objective, and consistent with the standards required for successful practice.
At the end of each completed course, students earn a final course grade. If a student believes they were unfairly, unjustly, or erroneously treated in the determination of their final course grade, the student has the right to appeal the final course grade. IHP’s Grade Appeal Policy
