Process for Ongoing Evaluation of Existing Courses
Program-specific
Review of program-specific courses is carried out in the respective program's curriculum committee.
Multidisciplinary
Review of multidisciplinary courses is carried out by the curriculum committee of the program from which the course originated.
Interdisciplinary
The purpose of ongoing evaluation of existing interdisciplinary coursework is to determine if the course is:
- Appropriately meeting an educational need at the Institute, and
- Appropriately meeting the needs of those disciplines whose students can elect the course.
This evaluation is most appropriately completed by the CCRC with major input from the primary course instructor, a faculty member in another discipline, and a relevant student representative. The CCRC will appoint one member, as appropriate, from the committee to review each course. The CCRC will request the student representative either to sit on the review committee or to obtain a student volunteer for the review.
Each member of the review committee will evaluate the course based on the "Criteria for Evaluation of Interdisciplinary Courses." Additional information can be gathered as necessary from other faculty and staff. Course evaluations will be reviewed. Each member will then submit this evaluation to the CCRC. The entire CCRC will review the evaluations and generate a summary report with suggested changes as indicated. For all interdisciplinary courses, the CCRC may vote to:
- recommend that the course continue in its present form,
- request further information, additions, or changes in the courses as described, and schedule it for a second review at a later date,
- recommend the course be reclassified, or
- recommend the course be discontinued
A written report will be sent to the dean, department chair, primary instructor, (where applicable), and the Provost. Recommendations of the CCRC will be presented to the Faculty Senate for approval. Courses are reviewed on a rotating basis.
