vii. Procedures for Initial Non-voting Faculty Appointments
Initial nominations originate either from a faculty member, program director, department chair, dean, or the Office of the Provost. If a faculty member recommends the appointment, she/he shall write a letter of nomination to the dean, which includes the expected role of the non-voting faculty member. Once the dean receives the nomination from a faculty member, the dean will determine whether to forward a recommendation for appointment to the provost.
Nominations for non-voting faculty appointments originating from within the Office of the Provost will follow the program procedures if the potential applicant has a program affiliation. For example, a candidate being recommended by the Office of the Provost for appointment in the School of Nursing would be recommended to the dean of the School of Nursing for a determination.
The nominating dean or CIPSI director shall arrange a discussion with the candidate to explain the process of application, the appropriate faculty rank, and the expectation for involvement with the MGH Institute. To request the assignment of rank, the dean or director will electronically submit the Non-Voting Faculty Appointment Form and the candidate’s CV to the Office of the Provost. The assignment of rank shall be in accordance with the Criteria and Interpretive Statements for rank. The length of the initial appointment will follow the guidelines for the approved rank.
If approved, the Office of the Provost will notify the dean or director of the appointment in writing. The Office of the Provost will also notify the non-voting faculty of an affirmative decision via formal letter.
