Procedures for Changing Tracks

At the time of hiring, faculty members are appointed to either the Academic or Clinical track, based upon the recommendation of the school dean or center director. Subsequent to hiring, any faculty member may request to be considered for change in track when:

      1. applying for reappointment,
      2. applying for promotion,

      3. having been conferred an earned doctorate, or

      4. his/her academic responsibilities at the Institute have changed significantly

All candidates for a track change [conditions (1)-(4) above] must specify track (and if applicable rank) being sought in their letter of application to the Rank and Promotion Committee. Appropriate documentation for both a track change as well as reappointment or promotion [numbers (1) or (2) above] includes all standard materials specified in the Faculty Handbook’s procedures for reappointment or promotion. In addition, the standard letter of support from the dean or director must specify support for both rank and track. The candidate whose status changes [numbers (3) and (4) above] at a time independent of reappointment or promotion may apply for a change of track by submitting appropriate documentation (such as required for reappointment) to his/her department chair, who then passes on the materials and letter of recommendation to the Rank and Promotion Committee for consideration of track.
