NP-849 Psychiatric/Mental Health Theory IV

Prerequisites: NP-845, NP-855, NP-848. Co-requisite: NP-885A. Pass/Fail, audit not available. This course is designed to assist the advanced practice nursing student in developing  knowledge, values, and skills to positively influence the mental health of children, adolescents, and their families. Applying knowledge of family systems, and child, adolescent, and adult/elder development, psychiatric assessment, and psychopathology, the course explores psychotherapeutic models derived from various theoretical frameworks, and examines current evidence regarding psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and families. Emphasis on empirically supported treatments and best practices will guide students in planning effective treatment strategies with balanced consideration of diagnostic characteristics of the major child and adolescent disorders, sociocultural factors, and individual patient and family characteristics. This course prepares the student to provide competent and comprehensive care to this population.
