Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligience
Introduction
As a part of the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP), the Entry-Level OTD program (OTD) is committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical behavior, including academic integrity and intellectual honesty. Faculty students, and staff are all held to these principles to maintain a strong and ethical academic community.
All students at the IHP, including those enrolled in the OTD program, must adhere to the Institute’s Academic Integrity Policy (https://mghihp.smartcatalogiq.com/current/catalog/section-v-student-rights-and-responsibilities/academic-integrity/).
Community members are expected to report violations of this policy as they witness or are made aware of them. If you are aware of any violations, you are expected to submit an Academic and Conduct Report Form (https://mghihp.formstack.com/forms/student_incident_report).
Academic Integrity Standards
All students in the OTD program must uphold the standards of academic integrity as defined in Article II, Section 1 of the Institute’s Academic Integrity Policy
(Academic Integrity Policy) . Students, faculty, and staff are responsible for the honesty and integrity of their own academic work, including applications for admission, financial aid, in addition to any group or collaborative academic or clinical work attributed to them that is submitted for academic evaluation or credit in an academic course or program of study.
Students are expected to adhere to the principles delineated in the AOTA Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and the technical standards defined by the program. All students should refer to the following policies for additional expectations regarding academic integrity:
Academic Integrity Procedures
- Informal Resolutions
Faculty and administrators aim to address minor academic integrity issues informally when appropriate. Informal resolutions are designed to provide students with feedback and guidance to improve, rather than imposing punitive measures. Students should refer to the Professional Behavior Actions section of this manual to learn more about Notifications of Concern, a common mechanism for informal resolution used by the program.
Formal resolution is pursued when:
Formal resolutions will follow the Academic and Disciplinary Action Policy (link) and procedures outlined in the Academic Integrity Policy (link).
Formal resolutions will be handled through the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP) process.
Sanctions for violations that are resolved through the formal resolution process will be in accordance with those outlined in the Institute’s Academic Integrity Policy. Students should refer to the Professional Behavior Actions section of this manual for additional information about formal sanctions.
- Appeals
- Reporting Informal Resolutions: Faculty or administrators must report informal resolutions to a student’s academic advisor. Repeated informal violations may result in formal action.
- Documentation: Informal resolutions will not be added to a student’s permanent academic file but will be recorded to track patterns of behavior.
- Formal Resolutions
- A pattern of violations exists.
- The breach in conduct is severe.
- Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures
- Sanctions
Students who wish to appeal decisions made through the Academic Integrity process should refer to this manual and the SHRS appeals policy.
Academic Integrity and AI: Individual and team assignments must adhere to the IHP’s academic integrity policy. Students are expected to compose, summarize, compare, and synthesize without the use of unauthorized aids including artificial intelligence (AI) tools or AI language models, unless said tools are explicitly permitted by the instructor and disclosed by the student. Reference managers (e.g. Mendeley, Zotero) and spelling/grammar checkers are the exception and can be used to improve the readability and language of student writing. Students suspected of inappropriately using unauthorized aids such as AI language models/content creators will be referred to OT Department’s Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP).
