Course Failures

Repeating Courses
Students who fail to achieve a grade of B- or better, or who fail to achieve 80 points or complete the requirements outlined in the course syllabus for pass/fail courses, may repeat the course only once. A student will be dismissed from the program if a grade of B- or better is not achieved the second time. Withdrawing from a course with a grade of “W” constitutes having taken the course once.

Continuing Study
Depending on which course is failed and the corresponding course pre-requisites and co-requisites, the student may petition to continue in the program on a full-time or part-time modified program of study. The student is responsible for initiating this petition and should review their proposed plan with the Program Director and their faculty advisor for academic guidance and feedback. The final petition must be submitted to and approved by the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures and will be considered only in cases of extenuating circumstances. Students approved for this option will be placed on academic probation for the duration of their part-time status.
No adjustments to courses or course schedules will be made to accommodate part-time schedules. Students are responsible for any expenses incurred because of the extended program.

Multiple Course Failures
Students are permitted to fail one course in the didactic curriculum (i.e., during the first two years of the program). Upon failing a course, the student will be referred to the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP) and have an opportunity to re-take the course. Due to the lock-step structure of the program, re-taking a course may not be possible until the next time it is offered, which may require the student to take a leave of absence from the program. Failure of two didactic courses, whether the same course twice or two different courses, will result in dismissal from the program.
For Level II Fieldwork, students are permitted to fail one Level II Fieldwork placement. This will result in a referral to the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP), who will review the circumstances and determine whether remediation and/or continuation in the program is appropriate. While students may be given the opportunity to remediate and complete another Level II Fieldwork, this is not guaranteed. In some cases, CAPP may recommend dismissal from the program following a single Level II Fieldwork failure. Failure of two Level II Fieldwork experiences will result in dismissal from the program.

Elective Course Failures
Students who do not achieve a grade of B- (2.7) or better in elective courses will be referred to the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures. The Committee will determine the course of action after reviewing the student academic record and consulting with course faculty and the student’s faculty advisor.
