a. Appointment
The process of faculty appointment results from shared governance between academic programs, the Faculty Senate, the provost, and the board of trustees. Faculty appointments at the MGH Institute reside in one of the schools. Faculty in the School of Nursing will have their appointments as instructor/assistant/associate/professor of nursing. Faculty in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the School of Healthcare Leadership will have their appointments in one of the constituent degree programs.
Faculty with leadership positions will have an appointment in the academic program most closely related to their scholarly and clinical expertise with the endorsement of the corresponding program director or chair. Regardless of appointment, faculty members who have their entire FTE dedicated to a leadership role are responsible for performing their assigned duties. Should they leave their leadership position, there is no obligation for the department of their academic affiliation to employ them as faculty members.
Faculty with a primary affiliation in one academic unit may have a courtesy appointment in another unit where their scholarly interests overlap. Such an appointment does not carry an FTE assignment or teaching responsibilities. The academic unit leader of the secondary unit may contribute to evaluation in primary department. Courtesy appointments may be requested on the initial appointment form. Existing faculty members can indicate interest in a courtesy appointment through a letter to the Provost with support of both academic unit leaders.
