8.1 Description
Team-based learning (TBL) will be a component of most genetic counseling courses, with some courses utilizing it more heavily than others, as appropriate. For the most part, the components of TBL match the components of a more traditional course format, but they are delivered in a different order. TBL consists of independent reading and study by the learner, completion of quizzes, completion of assignments, problem-based learning, and activities, and completion of cumulative tests. The primary differences include that 1) students receive more support compared to a typical classroom experience, because they are completing assignments and activities in the classroom in consultation with their peers and under the guidance of the instructor, versus completing these same activities at home after class independently, perhaps feeling less supported and less able to answer questions to facilitate their learning; 2) independent quizzes are often followed by team-based quizzes, but again, students should feel more support in that they are able to thoroughly discuss their responses and learn correct answers in real-time, with support from faculty. Additionally, learning and working together in teams models the real-world health care experience, so working successfully in courses within teams will set up students for professional success well beyond graduation.
