6.3 Fieldwork
Supervisors will be encouraged to discuss any student performance concerns with the student and the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) of the Genetic Counseling Program as they arise. However, if student performance is not meeting practice based competencies, the latest time point that the DCE would be made aware is after review of the student mid-point evaluation. At the mid-point evaluation of a fieldwork experience, if the primary supervisor indicates that the student’s performance to date would result in failing unless improvement occurs, a remediation plan will be put in place by the Director of Clinical Education and Program Director, with supervisor consultation. If a student fails a fieldwork rotation, repeating a similar fieldwork experience will be required (likely delaying graduation). Depending on the extent of the deficiency, the DCE may consult with the student, supervisor, and/or Program Director regarding remediation. Separately, the ability of the DCE to review cases within E*Value will also allow for the DCE to asses if there are any deficiencies in the student experience and create a dialogue and action plan with the student and supervisor at that time. The DCE is available to meet with students on an as-needed basis, as often as needed, regarding fieldwork.
